Portugal's online gaming sector experienced a significant surge in sports betting revenues, reaching an all-time high of €113.2 million ($132.9 million) in the last quarter of the previous year. The country's SRIJ regulator reported a remarkable 74.7% increase compared to the same period in 2019. Remote sports betting surpassed online casino games, becoming the primary revenue source for local iGaming operators. Sports betting revenue for Q4 rose by 89.6% year-on-year to €64.1 million ($75.2 million).
Since licensing its first online casino in 2016, Portugal has authorized ten more domains. The combined Q4 sports betting handle for these sites increased by 86% to €345.6 million ($405.6 million), with soccer wagers accounting for 86.7%. Video slots dominated online casino games, contributing 71.1% of Q4 revenues, while poker earned just 4.2%.
The Portuguese iGaming market continued its growth trajectory, with Q4 aggregated handle surging 69.2% YoY to €1.76 billion ($2 billion). Over 293,800 new players registered, although 10,300 individuals chose self-exclusion during the same period. The SRIJ flagged 49 domains for blocking and ordered 15 to cease operations. The regulator's blacklist now includes 675 prohibited sites, accompanied by its list of 680 entities issued with 'halt' notices.
